Haemorrhoids (Piles)

Haemorrhoids (Piles) can be very painful, itchy and uncomfortable. The cause is not absolutely known but linked to an increase in pressure around these blood vessels. This can be down to straining on passing a motion, pregnancy, being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle.

They are enlarged blood vessels which can feel lumpy and may protrude from the back passage.

Sometimes fresh blood can be seen on the tissue in small amounts.

Treatment is best with a steroid base and a soothing cream base but if the haemorrhoids are quite high in the rectum Anusol HC suppositories are ideal.

Anusol Plus cream has a steroid to reduce inflammation and itching.

If you wish something stronger, then Evans Pharmacy recommends Scheriproct.  It also contains a steroid but in addition, a local anaesthetic.

When should I see a doctor?

Children under 18 very rarely get piles so this needs to be investigated further.

If you have bleeding from the rectum or feel generally unwell then this needs further investigation.
