Thrush

Thrush is a common condition that affects both men and women.

It is often embarrassing to talk about thrush in a pharmacy, so here at Evans Pharmacy we have put together a useful information guide on getting the right treatment for you.  If you want to come into one of our branches and talk in private in one of our consultation rooms then just ask, we are here to help.

What causes thrush?

Thrush is caused by a yeast infection where the normal flora balance is disturbed, causing an over abundance of these yeast cells. Taking antibiotics is a very common in causing this.

What are the symptoms of thrush in women?

Itching and redness around the vagina.

A white discharge which does not have an odour and similar in appearance to cottage cheese.

Uncomfortable sex and stinging when passing urine.

What are the symptoms of thrush in men?

Irritation and redness around the head of the penis and under the foreskin.

When should I see my GP?

If you are pregnant, under16, over 60, have a weakened immune system or have never had thrush before, you should not self-treat, see your GP or go your local sex health clinic (Genito Urinary Medicine)

If you have more than two cases within six months this needs be further investigated.

What is the best treatment for me?

At Evans Pharmacy we recommend a Fluconazole capsule to be taken by mouth, and topical Clotrimazole cream for the relief of itching.

This is suitable for most people, for the treatment of thrush but check with the product information sheet before purchasing.
