Dry Eyes

Dry Eyes - this can be caused when the body doesn't either produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly.  Also certain medications can cause dry eye,s such as antidepressants like amitriptyline or beta blockers like atenolol.

This leads to the feeling of sore eyes and they can stick together but there is no purulent discharge.

The eye can also turn red.

At Evans pharmacy we recommend Hypromellose eye drops or Viscotears gel for the day, and an ointment for the night such as Xailin.  These keep the eyes lubricated and reducing soreness and redness.

If you wear contact lenses then these products shouldn't be used unless recommended by your optometrist.

When should I go to the doctors?

If there are any visual changes or pain in the eye or you can't stand sunlight then immediate attention is needed
