Chickenpox

Chickenpox is caused by the varicella zoster virus.  It usually gets better by itself within a week.  It normally occurs in childhood but you can catch it at any age.

The main symptoms are spots that can be itchy and sometimes painful.  A raised temperature, lack of appetite and generally feeling unwell can also occur

There is a vaccine to protect against chicken pox but is not part of the NHS Child Immunisation programme.  Evans Pharmacy offer this vaccine as a private service.

Alleviating symptoms is the key to manage this condition.  Pain relief and antihistamines along with cooling lotions or creams, aid to make life a little more pleasant

Ibuprofen is no longer recommended in the symptomatic treatment of chicken pox. It is so good at pain relief with anti inflammatory properties, children can scratch and not necessarily feel it and cause a secondary infection.
