A fungal nail infection normally affect the big toe but can affect any nail.
It can be a result of athletes foot or just occur of its own accord.
The nail becomes discoloured and this normally starts at the edge and then this spreads.
There are several treatment options.
The first one is a nail paint. This needs to be done weekly and this can take up to a year to fully get rid of the problem.
This is a product called Curanail
The second one is a prescription only product, which involves sending off nail clippings and a blood test and a course of 3-6 months of daily tablets. A lot of GP practices have stopped prescribing this product.
