Shingles vaccine now available

The shingles vaccine is now available from our pharmacies. Previously the vaccine has been unavailable from the manufacturer. We now have stock available.

Who can get shingles?

Anyone who has had the chickenpox virus can get shingles. This is because the virus remains inactive in the nerve cells. Reactivation of the virus results in this condition. You are more likely to get this if you have a weak or suppressed immune system and with increasing age.

What are the symptoms of shingles?

It’s estimated around one in every four people will have at least one episode of shingles during their life. The main symptom of this condition is pain, followed by a rash that develops into itchy blisters, similar in appearance to chickenpox. It can sometimes lead to complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia. This is where severe nerve pain lasts for several months or more after the rash has gone. You can find out more on the NHS choices website.

The shingles vaccine

It’s not always possible to prevent shingles, but a vaccine called Zostavax can reduce your chances of developing the condition. If you still develop shingles after having this vaccine, it may be milder and last for a shorter time than usual. The vaccine is available on the NHS to some people in their 70s.

We are pleased to offer this vaccine to people over 50 years of age on a private basis in our pharmacies. You will need a single dose of this vaccine. This will cost £130 until January 2018.
