Chickenpox vaccine available in our pharmacies

We now offer chickenpox vaccination in our pharmacies. This post tells you more about having a  chickenpox vaccine in one of our pharmacies.

Chickenpox

Chickenpox is a highly infectious and unpleasant disease. It is caused by the varicella zoster virus. Did you know that up to 90% of people who have not had chickenpox before can catch it from a household contact? It is most common in children below the age of ten, in whom it usually causes mild disease. It can be more serious in adults, particularly pregnant women and those who smoke.

Chickenpox vaccination

This vaccine is given routinely to children in the USA and Australia. However, in England NHS Chickenpox vaccination is limited to those in special circumstances.

This vaccine will protect you, furthermore it can also reduce the risk for other vulnerable people in your household. The vaccine can be given to adults and children over one year of age. We are able to offer this vaccination on a private basis in our pharmacies.

You will need two doses of this vaccine, ideally these will be given four to eight weeks apart. The cost of this vaccine in one of our pharmacies is £62.50 per dose.

This vaccine is not recommended for pregnant women or those with a weak immune system.

NHS Chickenpox vaccination

NHS Chickenpox vaccination is not offered routinely. Please speak to one of our pharmacists to see if you qualify for NHS vaccination.
