It is important to take antibiotics exactly as prescribed

In the media recently there have been articles about antibiotics. Some reports suggested that you might not need to complete the course. So what is the evidence behind the headlines?

One study is not enough evidence to change practice

The recent media reports came after just one study published in the Lancet. The study claimed that doctors could be able to prescribe shorter courses of medicines to treat infections. However, this was just one study. Different studies can be contradictory. So NHS England have concluded that much more evidence is needed before practice would need to be changed.

It is still important to complete the course

So for now the advice is to complete the course of antibiotics as prescribed. If you are concerned speak to one of our pharmacists for advice.

Do I need antibiotics?

You will not always need antibiotics. Some conditions, for example sore throats are often self-limiting. This means that you can buy over-the-counter treatments to relieve your symptoms. Call into one of our pharmacies for advice.

Always use antibiotics responsibly

It is important that we all use antibiotics sensibly. The Antibiotic Guardian website has actions that members of the public and healthcare professionals can take to promote the safe use of antibiotics.  Actions that you can take include:

  • See your pharmacist rather than GP in the first incidents for coughs, colds and sore throats
  • Have an NHS flu vaccine if you are offered one
  • If you are prescribed antibiotics, take them exactly as prescribed. Never share them with others.

The Antibiotic Guardian website also has advice for families and horse and pet owners. Many of your pharmacists and staff have pledged to take part in the campaign, have you?
